Ares, God of War

Members of Greek pantheon often have different animals associated with them, for instance Athena is often portrayed with an Owl to represent or her wisdom, and Zeus/Jupiter is commonly associated an eagle to represent his high and mighty authority. Ares’s own avian familiar is the vulture, presumably to represent the aftermath of dead and dying on the battlefield and the scavengers that brings.
Using the vulture as a jumping off point I wanted his profile and presence to evoke the unwholesome association most people have when they see that bird, thus his helmet’s nose guard comes to a beak-like hook, his cloak is topped with a collar of feathers, and his posture is slightly stooped to mimic the hunched look a vulture has. Ares’s arms and armor are also inspired by real bronze-age forms.  Most explorations of of Greek ascetics in popular culture tend to use what’s typicaly called the “classical” era, but many of our favorite myths and stories originate in the more ancient bronze-age or “Age of Heroes” and I wanted his gear to reflect that older era and the idea that War has been around a long, long time.
